at Abernethy for Perth & Kinross Council
The design tuning of the spatial acoustics of this open plan primary school south of Perth involved assessments of sound transfer from various activities through the building and relied on research work carried out some years ago on the acoustics of open plan schools. The architectural knowledge and experience of CSP Acoustics enabled the acoustic interventions to be integrated with the architect’s vision for the school. The work led indirectly to a research project for the Scottish Executive (available on their website) that examined the acoustics of primary schools in terms of privacy and communication in use and provided an analysis of advantages and disadvantages of open plan and cellular schools organisations in relation to teacher and pupil expectations and experience as well as educational needs.
